The REAL Sarah Palin: Live From New York on Saturday Night Live

Palin Pals Around with Tina Fey & Amy Poehler in Hugely Anticipated Parody Showdown

Let’s face it, the only reason to stay home and watch TV on a Saturday night these days is Tina Fey’s dead-on parody of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. This weekend, “Saturday Night Live” upped the ratings with a reality-meets-fiction drop-in from the real Alaskan governor.
Welcome to the intersection of politics and pop culture in the Lower 48.
Following days after John McCain’s one-liners at the Alfred E. Smith dinner at the Waldorf and “Letterman” appearance, the conservative cut-ups seem to have dropped economic policy for comedic stylings to try and appeal to Mr. and Mrs. Six-pack in “pro-American areas of this great nation,” who presumably are kicked back in front of the boob tube at home because gas is too expensive to actually go anywhere.

In the show’s opening, Fey-as-Palin told a group of reporters, “First off, I just want to say how excited I am to be in front of both the liberal elite media as well as the liberal regular media. I am looking forward to a portion of your questions.”
Backstage, the real Palin stood with SNL exec producer Lorne Michaels as the two watched the mock news conference. Palin lamented Michaels wouldn’t let her impersonate Fey on her show, “30 Rock.” Joining them, Alec Baldwin - who co-stars on “30 Rock” with Fey - confused Palin for Fey and told Michaels he shouldn’t let Fey demean herself by portraying the governor. Baldwin’s comeback when Michaels corrects him: “I see. Forgive me. I feel I must say this: You are way hotter in person.” Camera shots cutting between Fey-as-Palin and the real Caribou Barbie added to the Alice-down-the-rabbit-hole viewing experience. And though she didn’t strip down to a ‘Sexy Sarah’ swimsuit, Fey entertained the faux press corps with some “fancy pageant walking.”
Later, the consonant-dropping vice presidential hopeful came back for a second appearance during “Weekend Update” and watched Amy Poehler bust out a hilarious rap song about Alaska that ShoeMinx predicts will be this season’s “Dick in a Box.” ”My country ’tis of the, from my porch I can see Russia and such,” Poehler rapped as Palin “threw her hands up in the air, and waved ‘em like you just don’t care” and got her chair-dance groove on as actors dressed as Eskimos, her husband Todd, and a caribou pranced around in the background.
Palin’s appearance was anticipated since September, when Fey began portraying Palin just after McCain selected the then little-known governor as his running mate. Fey’s appearances as Palin have drawn huge audiences to the long-running sketch show and sealed its reputation as TV’s hot spot for political satire. The buzz on the Fey-Palin sketches has helped drive up SNL’s ratings about 50 percent over last season. After enjoying the results of the ‘Palin Bounce,’ the big question is how much more of a boost will Sarah Palin-as-Sarah Palin give the Nielsen numbers? Fey’s Palin, after all, is pretty tough to beat.
Whether or not Palin’s performance is befitting someone who aspires to an office in the Oval isn’t the only topic that will be jawed over the water cooler. GOP groupies are sure to be glossing over the leg-baring skirt and kicky black go-go boots the “Miss Congeniality” candidate wore at a rally in Philadelphia hours before her SNL debut. Showing a bit of skin while wearing boots, like this ‘Go Along’ style from Kenneth Cole Reaction, is just as good as a saucy little wink to distract attention away from things you’d rather not talk about-like the financial crisis, results of the Troopergate investigation . . .
