Dr. Doug Ross Returns for Series Send-off

Paging Dr. Ross, stat!

George Clooney is set to return to ER to jumpstart ratings of the long-running series.  TV’s original Dr. McDreamy will guest on the hit medical drama, which is in its 15th (!) and final season on NBC, during February sweeps.

Whether or not Clooney would show up for one last hurrah had been up in the air for months, despite Noah Wyle’s past assurance that his former small-screen co-star would return, “schedule permitting.”

The Ocean’s Eleven star is currently shooting his scenes and E! reports that there are three possible eps he could appear in.  There’s a documentary-style installment called “What We Do.” Another episode, “In Times of Old,” sets up several story-lines that will wrap in the two-hour series finale.  Or his scenes might be reserved for the super-duper last episode.  Our money is on all three to milk “The Return of Clooney” for all it’s worth.  Or maybe that’s just our wishful thinking.

Clooney last appeared on ER for an uncredited cameo in 2000, a year after taking off to make movies full-time, to help tie up the storyline for Julianna Margulies’ departing character, Nurse Carol Hathaway, who had twin daughters with Clooney’s Dr. Doug Ross.

Life & Style quotes a source saying that Clooney and Margulies will reunite as “part of an effort to wrap up all of the original characters’ story lines.”  And here’s some inside scoop to noodle on:  on-set snaps show what appears to be a wedding ring on the good doc’s finger.  Let the speculation begin.

Now that’s what we call must-see TV!

ER’s series finale airs April 2 on NBC.
