The Only Thing Missing is a Lute and an Old English Accent

Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker was not among the gaggle of famous faces at Fashion Week but the style star still managed to make a fashion statement while out and about in NYC. Following rule number one of “How to Dress Like a Style Icon”: Never let them see you in sweatpants, the Bitten designer was snapped in a very Gap-tastic ensemble accessorized with - ACK! WHAT are those things on her feet?!
These shoes are… Wow. Um. Yeah. They’re a bit Harajuku-Girls-Star-In-Gwen-Stefani’s-Cracked-Out-Theatrical-Production-Of-A Midsummer-Night’s-Dream. Or something.
Martin Margiela, the Keyser Soze of the fashion world, has clearly spent WAY too much time living off the grid. The avant-garde designer used jikatabi, the split-toe socks worn with kimonos, as the inspiration for his heeled “tabi shoes” like SJP’s split-toe pump since 1988. Since then, Margiela has featured variations of his signature tabi theme in his Maison Martin Margiela collection. The centuries old style is all the rage among the terminally chic in Europe and Asia. Yes, they’re very much a statement item and yes, it takes guts to wear them. Margiela may call it “experimental deconstruction,” we call it a toe wedgie. So now women have a new worry; first underwear wedgies, now this.
