Louboutin, Blahnik and Choo Among the Chosen Few
“If Dorothy were living in the 21st century, what would she wear?” is the question posed by The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slipper Collection. To commenorate the film’s 70th Anniversary next year, Warner Bros and Swarovski have commissioned a creative re-interpretation the film’s most iconic and revered symbol: Dorothy’s Magical Ruby Slippers.
Contemporary works of art from the likes of fashion masterminds A. Testoni, Abaete, Alberta Ferretti, Betsey Johnson, Botkier, Christian Louboutin, Diane von Furstenberg, Giuseppe Zanotti, Jimmy Choo, L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani, Lisa Pliner, Manolo Blahnik, Moschino, Oscar de la Renta, Roger Vivier, Sergio Rossi, Stuart Weitzman, Tibi, and Tuleh will compose The Wizard of Oz Ruby Slipper Collection.
In honor of this classic, 19 iconic designers will reinterpret the ruby slippers we’ve all fantasized about since childhood. While you may not admit it, we know you’ve clicked your heels together in the privacy of your own closet.
Here are some preliminary sketches by Gwen Stefani, Sergio Rossi and Moschino:
The one-of-a-kind shoes will be on display for one week at Saks Fifth Avenue – in the famed Fifth Avenue windows and 10022-SHOE – the designer shoe salon that’s so big it has its own zip code. An in-store gala event on the evening of September 4 will launch Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.
ShoeMinx can’t wait to see Betsy Johnson’s bold, playful sky-high reinvention jump off the page and onto the auction block:
Naturally, the magical slippers will travel the country (with three clicks and a few carefully chosen words) before being auctioned off, with all proceeds going to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
While you’re waiting to catch a glimpse of these cinematic jewels by designer greats, pick up your own pair of ruby slippers. And then promptly skip down the yellow brick road of your choosing.
