Karl Largerfeld is the KING of Big Statement Runway Show
PARIS 2008: In fashion circles, Dead Palatte Syndrome runs rampant. Veteran editors, filled with ennui, feel as if they’ve “seen it all”.
A few months ago, Chanel mounted an ambitious carousel installation to act as the runway for the Fall 2008 collection. Fitted with giant quilted bags, camellias, pearls and feminine bows - the carousel felt more Disney Sound Stage than Grand Palais for Paris Fashion Week. In a good way, of course. The Alice in Wonderland set, with it’s sculptural Chanel set pieces wowed this usually dead pan audience off their feet. A fitting metaphor for the timeless revival of the house classics.
The models walked in a circle, then climbed aboard the turning merry-go-round so that the clothes could be viewed again at leisure. With his Supersized Lazy Susan of Luxury, Karl Lagerfeld certainly reinforces his rep as the King of Big Statements
Fashion Week may be the proverbial merry-go-round, and this whirligig was the ultimate play on this theme. The Daily Pump loves the super-sized bags, shoes and especially Coco Chanel’s signature hat. At the end of the show, the carousel began to turn and out came Mr. Lagerfeld himself in a black double-breasted jacket. He escorted his models out, closing the show.
The Daily Pump gives high marks to Chanel’s two tone legwear and nude and black Mary Jane shoes. The nude color is unassuming from the front and pops to black at the back, promoting a smooth, slimming effect.
